Transmission Service & Repair
Transmission fluid service, diagnosis, and repair in Kelowna. Automatic, manual, CVT, and DSG. We tell you what the transmission actually needs, not what the most expensive option is.
Book This ServiceA transmission rebuild on a modern vehicle runs $3,000 to $6,000. Most of the failures we see started the same way: degraded fluid that the owner never changed because the manual said "lifetime fill." That phrase is misleading. It means the fluid will last the warranty period. It does not mean the fluid will last the life of the vehicle, especially in the Okanagan where summer towing on mountain grades pushes transmission temperatures well beyond what factory test cycles simulate.
Automatic transmission fluid does three jobs at once. It lubricates the gear sets and bearings, cools the internals through the transmission cooler, and hydraulically actuates the clutch packs that select each gear. The additive package includes friction modifiers for smooth clutch engagement, anti-wear compounds, antioxidants, and corrosion inhibitors. As the fluid ages, friction modifiers deplete, the base oil oxidizes, and fine metal particles from normal clutch wear accumulate. Dark, burnt-smelling fluid is fluid that has lost its protective properties. Shifting quality suffers first, then clutch wear accelerates, and the repair bill escalates from a $250 fluid service to a $4,500 rebuild.
We recommend ATF service every 60,000 to 80,000 km for normal driving. Vehicles that tow, haul, or sit in stop-and-go traffic should have it done every 40,000 to 60,000 km. CVT fluids should be changed every 40,000 to 60,000 km. DSG/DCT fluids every 40,000 km or 4 years. If you bought a used vehicle and do not know when the fluid was last changed, change it now. A pre-purchase inspection includes a transmission fluid condition check as part of the drivetrain assessment.
Manual transmissions are simpler but not maintenance-free. Gear oil degrades, synchronizer performance drops (hard shifting when cold, grinding into second gear), and bearings lose lubrication. Manual transmission oil changes every 50,000 to 80,000 km keep everything working the way it should.
Common problems we diagnose: slipping or delayed engagement (often fluid-related, sometimes clutch pack wear), harsh or erratic shifting (solenoid faults, contaminated fluid, or mechanical wear), shudder at highway speed during torque converter lockup (friction modifier depletion), and specific gears dropping out (electronic or mechanical failure). We read TCM fault codes and monitor live data on solenoid duty cycles, turbine speed, output speed, and gear ratio to distinguish between a $250 fluid service and a $4,500 rebuild before recommending anything. Our diagnostic equipment reads manufacturer-specific transmission codes that generic scan tools miss.
CVTs and dual-clutch transmissions (VW DSG, Audi S-Tronic, Ford PowerShift) require specific fluids and procedures. Wrong fluid in a CVT can destroy the belt and pulleys. Wrong fluid in a DSG causes clutch shudder and premature wear. We know the correct specifications for every type. Call (250) 861-4354.

Our Process
Fluid Condition Assessment
Fresh ATF is clear red. Dark brown or black fluid with a burnt smell means the additive package is depleted and the fluid is no longer protecting internal components. We check level, colour, smell, and look for metallic particles that indicate mechanical wear. This 5-minute check tells us a lot before we do any further diagnosis.
TCM Code Scan and Live Data
For shifting complaints or warning lights, we read fault codes from the transmission control module and monitor live data: turbine speed, output speed, solenoid duty cycles, gear ratio confirmation. This data separates a fluid problem from a solenoid fault from a mechanical failure. Each is a different repair at a different price point.
Fluid Service or Component Repair
If fluid service is the answer, we drain and refill (or flush, depending on condition) with the correct OEM-spec fluid, replace the filter, and install a new pan gasket. For electronic faults, we replace the failed solenoid or sensor. For mechanical failures, we provide a detailed rebuild or replacement estimate.
Road Test Under Load
Every transmission service gets a road test through all gear ranges under varying throttle conditions. We verify clean engagement from stop, smooth upshifts and downshifts, torque converter lockup without shudder, and the absence of any slip or fault codes. The vehicle comes back to you shifting the way it should.
Frequently Asked Questions
Every 60,000 to 80,000 km for most automatics under normal conditions. Towing, hauling, and frequent stop-and-go shorten that to 40,000 to 60,000 km. CVT fluid every 40,000 to 60,000 km. DSG fluid every 40,000 km. If you do not know the last time it was changed, change it now. A fluid service costs a fraction of a rebuild.
Maybe not. Slipping can come from low fluid, degraded fluid, a failed solenoid, or worn clutch packs. Low fluid and degraded fluid are the most common causes, and a fluid service sometimes resolves the symptom if caught early enough. Worn clutch packs require more involved work. Accurate diagnosis tells you which scenario you are in before you spend money.
A drain-and-fill replaces 40 to 60 percent of the fluid (what drains from the pan). A flush circulates new fluid through the torque converter and cooler lines, replacing nearly 100 percent. Flushes are more thorough, but on a high-mileage transmission with very dark fluid, the detergent action of fresh fluid can dislodge deposits and cause valve body problems. We recommend the right approach based on the fluid condition we find.
Yes. These dual-clutch units require VW Group-approved fluid (typically G 052 182 for wet DSG) and a specific drain-and-fill procedure. DSG service is due every 40,000 km or 4 years. We service these regularly on Golf, GTI, Tiguan, A3, and Q5 models in Kelowna. Correct fluid is not optional on these transmissions.
