Transmission Service & Repair
Transmission fluid service, diagnosis, and repair in Kelowna for automatic and manual transmissions. Expert service for all makes and models, with honest assessment of what your transmission actually needs.
Book This ServiceThe transmission is one of the most complex mechanical systems in your vehicle, and transmission repair is one of the most expensive. A complete automatic transmission rebuild on a modern vehicle can cost $3,000 to $6,000 or more. Yet many transmission failures are preventable with proper maintenance — specifically, regular transmission fluid service. At Okapro Automotive, we've been diagnosing and servicing transmissions across all makes and models in Kelowna since 1987, and our approach combines technical expertise with honest advice about what your transmission actually needs.
Modern automatic transmissions are engineering marvels. A 6-speed or 8-speed automatic contains hundreds of individual components: a torque converter that multiplies engine torque at low speeds, multiple planetary gear sets that create different gear ratios, hydraulically actuated clutch packs and bands that select gear ratios on command, a hydraulic valve body with dozens of solenoids and pressure regulators, a transmission control module (TCM) that makes hundreds of shift decisions per minute based on vehicle speed, throttle position, engine load, and driver input, and all of this operating in an oil bath that must maintain correct pressure, lubrication, and friction characteristics. The fluid that makes this system work is doing a demanding job.
Automatic transmission fluid (ATF) lubricates, cools, and hydraulically actuates the transmission simultaneously. It carries an additive package that includes friction modifiers (critical for smooth clutch engagement), anti-wear agents, antioxidants, and corrosion inhibitors. Over time and mileage, friction modifiers deplete, the base fluid oxidizes and darkens, and the fluid picks up fine metal particles from clutch wear. Degraded ATF can cause harsh shifts, slipping under load, and accelerated clutch wear that leads to eventual failure. A transmission fluid service at the right interval is far less expensive than a transmission rebuild.
The debate over transmission fluid service intervals has been influenced by manufacturers listing some units as "lifetime fill" — implying no fluid change is ever necessary. We view this with skepticism. "Lifetime" often means the warranty period, not the life of the vehicle. More practically, what constitutes "normal" driving for a Kelowna vehicle — towing a boat up mountain grades in 35°C heat, daily highway commutes on the Connector, or stop-and-go traffic — is generally more demanding than the test cycles used to establish service intervals. We typically recommend ATF service every 60,000–80,000 km for normal use, more frequently for vehicles that tow, haul, or operate in extreme temperature conditions.
Manual transmission service is simpler than automatic but often overlooked. Manual transmissions use gear oil rather than ATF, and it similarly degrades over time. Manual transmission oil changes every 50,000–80,000 km maintain synchronizer performance (the components that allow smooth gear changes) and bearing lubrication. A manual transmission with degraded gear oil often shows symptoms of difficult shifting, especially when cold, and grinding when engaging gears.
Common transmission problems we diagnose and repair in Kelowna include: transmission slipping or delayed engagement (often fluid related, but can indicate clutch pack wear), harsh or erratic shifting (valve body solenoid issues, fluid contamination, or mechanical wear), transmission shudder during torque converter lock-up (a common symptom of fluid friction modifier depletion), overdrive or specific gear dropping out (mechanical or electronic failures), and transmission warning lights or TCM fault codes. Our diagnostic equipment reads TCM fault codes and provides live data on solenoid operation, turbine speed, output speed, and gear selection — critical for accurate diagnosis.
We also service CVT (continuously variable transmission) units, found in many Japanese and European vehicles, and dual-clutch automated manual transmissions (DCT/DSG), which are common in Volkswagen, Audi, Ford, and other brands. These transmission types have very specific fluid requirements and service intervals — using the wrong fluid or following incorrect intervals on a CVT or DSG can cause expensive damage. We know the correct procedures and specifications for every transmission type we service.

Our Process
Transmission Fluid Condition Inspection
We check transmission fluid level, colour, and smell. Fresh ATF is a clear red colour. Dark brown or black fluid with a burnt smell indicates significant degradation or overheating. Metallic particles in the fluid suggest internal mechanical wear. This initial assessment tells us a great deal about transmission condition before any further diagnosis.
Electronic Diagnosis & Live Data
For shifting complaints, warning lights, or fault codes, we connect our professional scan tool to read TCM codes and monitor live data including turbine speed, output speed, solenoid duty cycles, and gear ratio confirmation. This data allows us to distinguish between a fluid issue, a sensor fault, a solenoid problem, and mechanical internal failures — very different repair scenarios.
Fluid Service or Targeted Repair
If fluid service is the appropriate treatment, we drain and refill or perform a complete flush with the correct OEM-specification fluid, replace the transmission filter, and install a new pan gasket. For electronic faults, we replace the appropriate solenoid or sensor. For more significant mechanical failures, we provide a detailed estimate of rebuild or replacement options.
Road Test & Shift Quality Verification
After service or repairs, we road test through all gear ranges under light, moderate, and load conditions. We verify smooth engagement from stop, clean upshifts and downshifts, proper torque converter lock-up, and the absence of any slipping, shuddering, or fault conditions. We confirm TCM fault codes are resolved before returning your vehicle.
Frequently Asked Questions
We recommend every 60,000–80,000 km for most automatic transmissions under normal driving conditions. For vehicles that tow, haul, or experience frequent stop-and-go driving, every 40,000–60,000 km is prudent. CVT fluids should typically be changed every 40,000–60,000 km. DSG/DCT fluids every 40,000 km. If you don't know when the transmission fluid was last changed on a used vehicle you've purchased, we'd recommend changing it now — the cost is minor compared to a transmission repair.
Not necessarily. Transmission slipping can be caused by low fluid level, degraded fluid, a failed solenoid, or a worn clutch pack. Low fluid or degraded fluid is the most common cause, and a fluid service sometimes resolves slip symptoms — especially if caught early. Significant clutch pack wear or mechanical damage requires more extensive repair. The only way to know is accurate diagnosis. We'll tell you honestly what we find.
A standard drain-and-fill removes the fluid in the pan (typically 40–60% of total fluid volume) and replaces it with fresh fluid. A transmission flush uses a machine to circulate new fluid through the entire system including the torque converter, replacing close to 100% of the old fluid. Flushes are more thorough, but not always appropriate — on a high-mileage transmission with very degraded fluid, the sudden introduction of fresh fluid with its detergent additives can dislodge deposits that then cause valve body issues. We'll recommend the right approach based on your transmission's current condition.
Yes. We service DSG and S-Tronic dual-clutch transmissions, which require specific Volkswagen Group-approved transmission fluid (typically VW G 052 182 for wet DSG units) and a drain-and-fill procedure specific to these units. DSG service is typically recommended every 40,000 km or 4 years, and we see many of these transmissions in Kelowna on VW Golf, GTI, Tiguan, and Audi Q3/Q5 models. Using the correct fluid and procedure is critical.
