Book This ServiceWrong oil viscosity is one of the most common maintenance mistakes we correct. A 2019 Tiguan came in last year running 5W-30 because that is what the quick-lube shop had on hand. The VW spec calls for 0W-20 meeting VW 508/509. Thicker oil in that engine starves the variable valve timing system of hydraulic pressure and accelerates cam phaser wear. The owner had no idea. We drained it, refilled with the correct specification, and the rough idle he had been living with for months disappeared.
Viscosity numbers (0W-20, 5W-30, etc.) are not interchangeable. The manufacturer engineered each engine around a specific oil flow rate, film strength, and additive package. Running too thick an oil in a modern engine causes problems. Running too thin an oil in a truck engine that tows heavy loads allows metal-on-metal contact under pressure. We look up the specification for every vehicle before we open a jug.
Full synthetic oils handle temperature extremes better than conventional oil. In Kelowna, that matters. Winter mornings hit -15°C and summer afternoons push 38°C. Synthetic oil flows faster at cold startup (protecting the engine sooner) and resists breakdown at high temperatures (maintaining film strength when you are towing a boat to Skaha Lake in July). Most vehicles built in the last 10 years specify full synthetic from the factory.
European vehicles have their own oil specifications that do not align with standard North American ratings. VW 504/507 for TDI diesels, BMW Longlife-04, Mercedes MB 229.5 and 229.51, Porsche A40. Putting a standard 5W-30 in a VW TDI can damage the diesel particulate filter. We stock European-spec oils and know which one goes in each model.
Filters matter. A cheap filter that bypasses under pressure or collapses internally lets unfiltered oil circulate through the engine. We use filters with the correct bypass valve rating and media capacity for each application. For vehicles on extended drain intervals (12,000+ km), we use extended-service filters rated for the full interval.
Every oil change here includes a multi-point check: tire condition and pressure, all fluid levels, belt and hose condition, air filter, cabin filter, lights, and an underbody leak inspection while the vehicle is on the hoist. We note what we find and tell you about it. We do not pressure you into same-day repairs that can wait. The goal is to keep you informed so you can plan maintenance on your own schedule. Our Process
Spec Lookup and Oil Selection
We look up your vehicle's exact oil specification. Not just the viscosity grade, but the additive package and manufacturer approval code. European vehicles get European-spec oil. High-mileage vehicles get a formula discussion. You know exactly what is going into your engine.
Drain, Filter, Reinstall
Old oil drains fully. Filter comes out and gets replaced with one rated for your drain interval. Drain plug washer gets inspected and replaced if needed. Plug torqued to spec. Oil life monitor reset.
Fill and Leak Check
New oil goes in at the correct quantity. Engine runs to circulate. We check the drain plug and filter for leaks, shut down, and verify the dipstick level. Vehicles without a dipstick (common on newer BMWs and VWs) get checked through the electronic oil level system.
Multi-Point Check
While your car is on the hoist: tire condition and pressures, all fluid levels, belt and hose condition, air filter and cabin filter, brake pad thickness (visual), exterior lights, and an underbody leak scan. We record findings and review them with you. Nothing gets added to your bill without a conversation first.
Frequently Asked Questions
Full synthetic on a modern engine: 8,000 to 12,000 km under normal conditions. Conventional oil: 5,000 to 8,000 km. Short trips, towing, extreme temperatures, and dusty roads all shorten the interval. We recommend the right interval for your vehicle and how you drive it. Never go beyond 12 months even if the mileage is low.
Yes. VW, BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, and Audi all specify oil formulations that standard North American oils do not meet. The wrong oil in a VW TDI can damage the diesel particulate filter. BMW Longlife-04 is a specific formulation, not a marketing label. We stock European-spec oils and match the exact approval code to your engine.
Oil life monitors estimate based on engine starts, RPM, and temperature data. They do not measure the oil directly. Dusty conditions, short trips, and towing degrade oil faster than the algorithm assumes. If you are past 10 months or approaching 12,000 km, change it regardless of what the monitor says. The monitor is a guide, not a guarantee.
Coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid, transmission fluid, and windshield washer levels. Tire tread depth and pressures. Air filter and cabin filter condition. Belt and hose condition. Wiper blades. All exterior lights. Underbody visual for leaks. Brake pad thickness where visible. We note everything and review it with you before you leave.
